Athletic Staff

Our hockey staff has extensive experience coaching at the professional, collegiate, junior and youth hockey levels. Each member has been hand selected because of their knowledge, expertise and commitment to fulfilling the mission and purpose of Northstar Christian Academy. Each staff member brings unique gifts and experiences as well as a commitment to invest in each and every player at the deepest level possible.

Dallas Steward

Interim Northstar Director, Co-Head Coach 16U AAA

Dallas Steward is entering his 4th year with Northstar. Steward came to the Knights after coaching at Michigan Tech University (NCAA Div. I) for 4 seasons. Before that, he as was Associate Head Coach of the Chicago Steel (USHL) for 2 seasons, winning the Clark Cup Championship in in 2016-17 and was also the Assistant Coach/ Director of Scouting for the Sioux Falls Stampede (USHL) for 4 seasons, winning the Clark Cup Championship in 2014-15. During Steward’s time in the USHL, he served as the Assistant Coach for Team USA at the 2015 World Jr A Challenge winning the Bronze medal. Prior to becoming a coach, Dallas, played at the University of Alaska Anchorage (NCAA Div. I) from 2000-2004 and played professional for 6 seasons in the ECHL and CHL.

Mark Bassen

Coach

Mark Bassen is entering his 1st season with the Northstar Knights. Born into a hockey family in Calgary, Canada, Mark followed in the footsteps of his father Hank, and brother Bob who both played in the NHL. Beginning his hockey journey, he played 2 years junior in the WHL signing his first Pro contract with the Philadelphia Flyers. He then embarked on a 12-year professional career within the AHL, IHL, Canadian National Team, and Germany’s DEL. After retiring he went to Bible school at Lincoln Christian College in Illinois. He then founded and served as pastor of Crosswalk Chapel in Pekin, Illinois for 20 fulfilling years. Within the last 5 years Mark’s family moved to Germany and worked professionally inside hockey around Scheveningen of the DEL. While there, he received international experience coaching levels of junior and U17 hockey teams. Over the last 30 years Mark has coached hockey at every level from Mite to Junior specializing in skating and edge work. Mark’s amazing family include his wife, Laura and their 5 children Boaz, Alex, Bailey, Charlie, and Emma with their Golden retriever Hank.



Cody Wang

Assistant Hockey Ops & Strength Coach

Cody is in his first year as the assistant Hockey Ops for the Knights. Originally from Moorhead MN, Cody was a standout 4-sport athlete (Football, Baseball, Hockey, Track) at Moorhead High School. Cody later played collegiate football for Minnesota State Moorhead and North Dakota State. As a collegiate football player at MSU-Moorhead Cody was a two-time recipient of the Marvin “Doc” Geib award as the programs most dedicated player. Post College, Cody spent 12-years in the active military and 4-years in the MN National Guard, including 2-combat tours in support of Operation Iraq Freedom / New Dawn. Cody served in multiple capacities while in the military to include Infantry Platoon Leader and Company Commander, Battalion and Division Plans, Operations, and Logistics Officer. Cody graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Minnesota State Moorhead and a graduate degree in Exercise Science from Concordia University, St. Paul. Prior to starting at NorthStar Cody worked for Minnesota Made Hockey in Edina, Minnesota. While at Minnesota Made Cody served as a player development coach and the Director of 1 st Athlete Training Center which serves as Minnesota Made’s off-ice training facility. Cody is married (Katie) and has three kids Ella (18), Connor (15), and Gabby (7).

Jack Rinzel

Head Strength and Conditioning Coach

Jack is entering his 1st year at Northstar and is a native of Chanhassen, Minnesota. He received his Bachelors of Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences from the University of Minnesota-Duluth and his Masters of Exercise Science from the University of South Dakota. He most recently spent 2 years at the University of Idaho as a Strength and Conditioning Assistant where he worked with Football and made 2 appearances in the FCS playoffs. He also led the Women’s Soccer team, which took home the Big Sky Conference Championship in 2023. Jack also led Women’s Volleyball and Track.

Rylan Galiardi

Head Coach U18 Prep, Hockey Director

Galiardi is entering his 5th season here at Northstar following a four year stint with Sioux Falls in the USHL, winning the Clark Cup Championship in 2018-19. A 2010 graduate of Minnesota State – Mankato, he was captain his senior year and named MSU Athlete of the Year. He spent time playing in the AHL, ECHL, and the EIHL in Great Britain, winning an ECHL Kelly Cup in his rookie year. He got his coaching career started as the head coach with the Southern Tier Xpress in the NA3HL in 2014, and then as head coach one year with the Sioux Falls Jr. Stampede 18U AAA team. Rylan plans to invest in every individual by loving, caring and serving them with enthusiasm, in helping prepare them to become better men of character and integrity in the next stage of their lives.

Joe Cullen

18U Associate Coach

Cullen is entering his 2nd season with the Northstar, bringing a wealth of experience to the Knights. Prior to Northstar, he was the Head Coach at Gentry Academy in Minnesota for 5 consecutive seasons, winning a Minnesota State High School Championship in 2021. Before transitioning into coaching, Cullen had an extensive playing career, accumulating over 400 points scored in 500+ pro games played. He began his hockey career at Moorhead High School where he was recruited to play for the National Team Development Program. Cullen then played collegiately for 4 seasons at Colorado College where his team made 3 NCAA tournament appearances, winning 1 WCHA Championship where he was named “defensive player of the year” in the WCHA 2002-03 season. His abilities led him to being drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2000 NHL Draft. Professionally, Cullen carved out an 11 year playing career making stops in the United States, Canada, Germany, Italy and Scotland before he retired in 2014.

Brandon Fehd

16U Assistant Coach / Skills Coach

Assistant Coach Brandon Fehd is in his first year at NorthStar, originating from Gilbert AZ. He
recently retired from playing pro hockey for 8 years, playing in the ECHL, SPHL, and in the
Allsvenskan league in Sweden. Brandon has worked as a skills coach for 13 years in the
offseason, coaching hockey camps throughout his playing career. Prior to his pro career,
Brandon played collegiately at Northlands College double majored and graduated with degrees
in business management and sustainable entrepreneurship.
