Knights Alumni Spotlight - Logan Anderson
Name: Logan Anderson
Years Played at Northstar: 2020-2022
Current Team: Retired
This Northstar Knights alumni spotlight features the deadlifting master, Logan Anderson. If you ever find yourself in a weight room with Anderson, aka “Scoob”, chances are, he will be deadlifting at some point. This guy absolutely loves to get after it in the gym. Hailing from Elkhorn, Nebraska, Scoob was the glue guy any team would dream of having. His fun loving attitude and determination to push himself in the classroom, weight room and on the ice made it a joy for any staff member to work with him. We all miss Scoob around Northstar but we know he is off making, and will continue to make the world a better place around him. Enjoy this interview from Logan Anderson!
What are you up to at the moment?
I am currently attending the University of South Dakota and studying nursing. This year was a growth year for sure. I definitely learned more about myself and I did a lot of self reflecting and kind of found out what makes me happy in life and what doesn't. One thing that I found that does make me happy is pushing my mind and my body to the limit. I've always found joy in that so that would be the next step in my life which would be to go into the Navy. College has been pretty easy to be honest after playing sports and doing school all throughout my life. I want to keep challenging myself. I've always liked a challenge because it keeps you sharp and keeps you disciplined so right now I'm just training for the Navy.
What led you to Northstar?
When I came to Northstar, it was a place where once again I thought I could test my mental and physical capacity basically to see how far I can push myself and also to develop as a human being more. There are a lot of lessons that I've learned, especially at Northstar, that I've incorporated into my life now like discipline. I’ve found that nothing really gets done unless you're disciplined because most of the time you don't wanna do stuff that's going to make you productive so you have to be disciplined in what you do. The reason that I came back (for a 2nd year) was because of those reasons and also because of the brotherhood that you build. With the guys there, they start off as strangers in the beginning of the year, but by December they're probably some of your best and closest friends. But, if you graduate and stay two years like I did, they will be your best friends for life.
How did Northstar impact your spiritual life and how have you been able to carry that on?
It impacted my spiritual life by helping me to learn more and develop more as a Christian and just knowing the Lord's word because we go through it every single day and also knowing his plan for me. Sometimes it can be a little bit murky and we might not see it but it's kind of like us looking through swamp water. The Lord is looking through crystal-clear water and he knows what's gonna happen 5 to 6 to 10 years away but we might be in the murky water and we can just see what's in front of us so we should keep our eyes on him.
How did Northstar grow your skill development in hockey?
It definitely made me push my limits, especially some of the drills that we did. It made me feel really uncomfortable when we first started doing them but we did them so much and we were on the ice so much that eventually I was able to concentrate on those drills and get better at them. The coaching staff was always uplifting and always there for me. If I had any questions, even now, if I have any questions about training, I can ask Frito (Josh Freitas) and he's more than happy to help me out with that. They have always helped me with my strength and conditioning and just making sure that I'm being safe and doing things the right way.
What were some of the hardships of Junior hockey and some lessons you learned there?
I decided not to pursue juniors because I feel like there is more that this world has to offer than hockey. I could have just kept playing but I wanted to experience a little bit more of what life has to offer and find out more about myself which I was never really able to do because hockey was always year round.
Any advice to give to the current Northstar players or future knights?
I would say find on this was kind of hard um lessons and you might not see why they're trying to teach you on right now but once you get out of there you understand that this world is filled with a lot of weak people and a lot of people that just want to do things the easy way and once you once you're at north star you won't really be able to look at the world like how you were before how anyone else sorry excuse me how anyone else would be able to because you would have seen how how hard and how far you could push your body and mind and you'll probably want to achieve more in your life because that's what north star is all about finding find those people who want more which I always loved so I mean I was your my advice like embrace that embrace the the hardships and all the lessons they try to instill in you because once you leave like they'll be they'll be worth a lot they'll be worth more than gold.
Favorite scripture verse or one that you feel is meaningful to you right now?
The verse that is impacting my life right now is Isaiah 41:10. (“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” - ESV). Where I'm about to go, I'm gonna need the Lord with me because there's gonna be some long days and long nights ahead and I’ll need to have the courage to step outside of my comfort zone constantly once again. I am going to have to really be leaning on the Lord and just knowing that He’s got a plan for me.
What's next for you?
I will be going into the Navy while I'll take the Navy SEAL PST (Physical Screening Test) and that's what I'm training for right now. Hopefully in about a year or so, I'll be in a BUD’s class and then graduating in the next two or three years.
Kaleb Pitman and Colten Sell sign Tenders in the NCDC
Alexandria, MN (Apr. 17, 2023)
For more information, contact: Johnny Van Atta, Director of Hockey Operations (615) 830-1113, [email protected]
The Northstar Knights are proud to announce that 18U Prep team forward’s Kaleb Pitman and Colten Sell have signed tenders in the NCDC. Pitman signed with the Jersey Hitmen and Sell signed with the Wilkes Barre-Scranton Knights. The NCDC (National Collegiate Development Conference) is the top tier and the only tuition-free league in the USPHL. So far in the 2022-23 season, the NCDC has produced 18 NCAA D1 commits.
Pitman, a Circle Pines, MN native is a 2 year veteran with the 18U Knights team. Last season, the forward put up 30 points (15G, 15A) in 52 games played. This year, Pitman continued to refine his game and improved his point total to 41(19G, 22A) in 44 games. His 0.93 points per game ranked 3rd on the Knights behind Caleb Elfering and Bronson Hunt. Additionally, Pitman tied for 3rd on the team with 90% 5v5 point percentage, meaning he was a strong contributor to his team at even strength. Pitman was also the most disciplined player on the 18U Knights team this season in Penalty Minute terms as he only took 3 minor penalties the whole season. Pitman will look to add to an already strong Jersey Hitmen team next season as they won back-to-back USPHL Championships in 2020-21 and 2021-22. “I am super thankful for this opportunity and I'm super excited to be a part of the Hitmen organization”, said Pitman.
Sell came to Northstar in 2021 from Woodland Park, CO. He is also a 2 year vet with the Knights, playing on the 16U team last season and on the 18U team this season. Last season, Sell put up 16 points (8G, 8A) in 50 games. This season, Sell improved to 19 points (7G, 12A) in 42 games played. For those who are regular attendees at the Knights games know that Sell is a warrior on the ice. Although hits and drawn penalties are not tracked at this level, Sell would more than likely be at the top of both categories. After being sidelined from an injury that caused him to miss the final 3 games last season and the first 7 games of this season, Sell exploded for a hat trick in his first game back against the Winnipeg Wild at the Fargo Force Showcase. The tenacity and perseverance Sell has will be a welcomed addition to the WB/S Knights team who just completed their first season in the NCDC.
With Pitman and Sell signing tenders, the 18U Knights now have 13 players signed or affiliated with Junior teams: Sam Kartch (Utah Outliers), Landon Dauner (Austin Bruins), Colten Sell (WB/S Knights), Jake Lundeen (Notre Dame Hounds), Cooper Fredericks (Notre Dame Hounds), Brayden Berg (Oklahoma Warriors), Kaleb Pitman, (Jersey Hitmen), Caleb Elfering (Wenatchee Wild), Dawson McCann (Steinbach Pistons), Nathan Huntington (Utah Outliers), Bauer Berry (Muskegon Lumberjacks), Brady Jones (Utah Outliers), and Beck Lidén (Steinbach Pistons).
Stay tuned for the next press release as we will be starting a series of Northstar Knights Alumni Spotlights!

Alexandria, MN (Apr. 11, 2023)
For more information, contact: Johnny Van Atta, Director of Hockey Operations (615) 830-1113, [email protected]
The Northstar Knights are proud to announce that 16U Knights defenseman, Lincoln Kuehne, has been selected to the US National Team Development Program roster for the 2023-24 season. Based in Plymouth, Michigan, The NTDP is the most prestigious hockey program in the United States, taking the 24 best players from around the country and developing them to become the best American athletes in the country. Unlike other competitive athletic teams, the success of the NTDP does not gauge their success on wins and losses. Instead, they focus on the development of skills and gaining experience against older competitors. The Under-17 Team, which Kuehne will play on next season, competes in the USHL and also participates in three international events annually. According to their website, the NTDP has produced 5 first overall picks in the NHL, 90 first round NHL picks, and 666 total players who have played in the NHL.
Originally from Fargo, ND, Kuehne came to Northstar this season following his time with Team North Dakota where he was one of their top players. This past season, Kuehne put up 10 goals and 18 assists for 28 points in 52 games as a defenseman for the 16U Knights. “Lincoln has such a love for the game and he’s committed to doing whatever it takes to get better,” said 16U Coach Dallas Steward in an interview with The Rink Live. “The biggest thing with Lincoln is his skating ability, with and without the puck, and he wants to be involved in the offense. But at the same time, he’s very competitive defensively. When he plays simple, he’s really effective and efficient, and he’s a tough kid to play against. He’s smart defensively and he’s got skill and a big shot on the offensive side of the game. That’s the part of his game that I think the NTDP would desire to have.”
“I think Northstar really helped my growth with the wonderful coaching staff they have here,” said Kuehne. “They have cared about my development every day and have taught me how to be a great man and a good person off the ice too. I am excited to play against older guys next year and feel ready to take the next step in my development.”
The Knights are excited to watch Kuehne excel at the next level and use his God-given gifts to impact the hockey world for many years to come!

Kartch, a Duluth, MN native is in his second season in the Knights organization but his first on the 18U Prep team. He currently has 19 points (9G, 10A) in 29 games played this year in a season where he has dealt with a few different injuries. The toughness he has displayed this season will be a welcomed addition to the Outliers. In the 2021-22 season, Kartch was selected to the NAPHL All-Star game after putting up 44 points (23G, 21A) in 56 games played. “I am excited for the opportunity Utah has given me”, Katch said. “I want to thank God for opening doors in my life to get me where I am today. I want to thank my parents along with the staff, coaches and teammates at Northstar for shaping me into a better man and a hockey player.”
Huntington, from Berkeley Lake, GA is a seasoned Northstar veteran as he is currently in his 3rd season in the Knights organization and his second on the 18U Prep team. This season his experience and leadership led him to be selected as one of the captains for the team. In the 2021-22 season playing as a forward, Huntington scored 43 points (18G, 25A) in 56 games played. This season, Huntington has shown off his versatility and has been used as the team’s “swiss army knife” by playing as both a forward and defenseman at different times this season. In 37 games played, he has scored 26 points (5G, 21A) and has been featured on both the power play and penalty kill units. Utah will be getting a well rounded and a “team-first” player in Huntington next year. “I am extremely excited to be a part of the Outliers team next year”, said Huntington. “I want to thank all my parents, coaches and teammates for pushing me to become the man and hockey player I am today. Finally, I want to thank God for giving me the opportunity to be a part of such an elite organization. Go Outliers!”
“Congratulations to Nathan and Sam on being recognized as an asset to the Utah Outliers”, said 18U Prep coach Tim Jackman. “Nathan has been a 3 year player at Northstar and has a joy about playing the game of hockey that is contagious to his teammates. He has a great competitive nature and will be a great servant to the Utah Outliers. Sam will be a welcomed addition to Utah as a player that can play hard-nosed hockey every night. He has a knack to get to the front of the net and finds ways to get his stick on pucks. Both players will bring a servant attitude and will be a welcomed attention to the Utah Outliers locker room.”

Like every Knight player, we know Fredericks will bounce back stronger than before and will be a tremendous addition to the Hounds. “I would like to thank God for allowing me the opportunity to continue my hockey career”, Fredericks said. “I would also like to thank my family for supporting me through the years as well as my coaches and I look forward to continuing my hockey career up in Canada.”

Whether that is him using his skills from the farm to put his hands to work around the sports complex or school or simply encouraging his teammates he has grown in each of these areas so much. I have no doubt that he will use all the gifts that God has given him to glorify the Lord and bring the Love of Christ to the hockey world and his future teammates in Steinbach.” The Knights are proud of all the hard work Dawson has done to earn this opportunity. “I’m super excited to be going to a team that has a very positive and supporting atmosphere”, said McCann. “I am thankful for my family, teammates and coaches for helping me get to this point.”

As a coach, it makes us proud to see a young man grow in maturity in his game and how he handles his day-to-day responsibilities. He will be a great attrition with his vision and his shot and how he has continued to learn how to defend.” Jones played in a 2 game stint with the Outliers over Christmas break and registered 1 assist. “I'm really grateful for this opportunity,” Jones said. “I would like to thank the people around me - My coaches, friends and family for pushing me along the way. It feels just like yesterday that the players were rolling in to “welcome weekend” back in September. Three months later, the Knights are already at the halfway mark of both their game season and their school year. The boys have a lot to be proud of looking back but are also looking forward with determination to continue growing and building off their success from the first half.
The 18U Knights currently rank #2 in the nation with a record of 27-2 and has won 12 straight games dating back to Nov. 4. They are averaging 4.52 goals per game and have allowed 2.41 goals per game. Lincoln Hjelm, a recent University of Nebraska-Omaha commit, leads the team in points with 36 (14G, 22A), the latter of which is a team-high). Carranza rounds out the elite goaltending group with a 7-3 record and has a .904 SV% and a 2.23 GAA. “I love our team’s commitment to learning and getting better every day,” said Coach Mark Abalan. “This group has come together from day one and been all about ‘the team’. It’s been a team first approach. I love the selflessness these guys display and the attitude they have day in and day out has really stood out for Dallas and I. The care and love they have for each other has been a driving force for us. The team told us at the very beginning that they wanted to be hard to play against and they have made that our identity through competing and hard work. We are very proud of these young men and it has been a real joy to come to the rink with them every day. We look forward to more of the same in the second half as we keep pushing each other to grow on and off the ice.”
As much work as the boys are putting in on the ice, they’ve also been working just as hard in the classroom. The entire 18U Knights team boasts a GPA of 4.19. C.J Sehlke earned the “Academic Honor Roll” (3.0-3.49 GPA). Earning the honor of “Distinguished Honor Roll” (3.5 - 4.0 GPA or higher) are an astounding 24 student athletes: Max Evans, Nathan Huntington, Beck Lidén, Caleb Elfering, Nate Farrell, Ryan Murphy, Kaleb Pitman, Cooper Fredericks, Brady Jones, Tanner Hunt, Jake Lundeen, Luke Russell, Gavin Hruza, Joe Stauber, Bronson Hunt, Sam Kartch, Dawson McCann, Shane Burns, Brayden Berg, Bauer Berry, Noel Friedman, Landon Dauner, Colten Sell and Luke Sittler. Many of the 18U players take college level classes which gives them the chance to earn a 5.0 GPA. Of those 24 on the “Distinguished Honor Roll”, Evans, Huntington and Lidén all had a perfect 5.0 GPA. Earning the “Academic Honor Roll” (3.0 - 3.49 GPA) for the 16U Knights are Jake Spraetz, Bode Laylin, Lucas Schoenborn and Lincoln Kuehne and earning the “Distinguished Honor Roll” (3.5 - 4.0 GPA of Higher) are Brady Krey, Alex Klimek, Jaxson Kaebel and Carter Sanderson, Titus Keyes, Deegan Hoffbauer, Ben Albers, Grady Stallman, Michael Mathison, Ben Likness, Andrew Leung, Evan Leden, Lincoln Hjelm, Merik Grinaker, Tyler Dahms, and Stefano Carranza. “These men have shown they care about what happens on the ice as well as what happens in the classroom”, said Academic Director Chip Elfering. “We want to instill in them what it means to be God’s warrior in the classroom as well. Proverbs 22:6 says, ‘Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.’ These men work hard and they see the fruit in their labor.”
The Knights return to the ice on January 14 and 15, 2023, when they host Bishops College School. The 16U Knights will play at 4:30 PM on Saturday and 9:30 AM on Sunday. The 18U Knights will play at 7:00 PM on Saturday and 12:00 PM on Sunday.
The Knights wish everyone a happy new year and look forward to seeing everyone in 2023!

Hjelm, an Omaha native, is no stranger to the Mavericks program, having grown up just 20 minutes from the campus. “Playing at UNO has been a dream of mine since I was little and it feels great to be one step closer to that with my commitment,” Hjelm said. “I am thankful for the people that God has implemented in my life to help me reach my goal. I am especially thankful to Northstar for making me a better man not only on the ice but off the ice as well.” Since arriving at Northstar in the summer of 2021, Hjelm has been an impact player for the 16U Knights. Last season, he ranked 2nd on the team in scoring as he put up 51 points (17G, 34A) in 47 games played. His production and work ethic displayed throughout the season caught the eyes of the Waterloo Blackhawks who selected Hjelm 94th overall in Phase 1 of the USHL draft last May. This season, he has continued his development, ranking 2nd on the team in scoring with 27 points (11G, 16A) in 24 games played and leading the team with 12 Power Play Points (5G, 7A). “Lincoln is a tremendous young man,” said Coach Mark Abalan. “He is the kind of player you want in your culture. He is a hardworking competitor who is team first all the time. A total leader and winner. I can’t say enough about how special of a young man Lincoln is. UNO has got themselves a real gem.”
Catch Lincoln and the rest of the Knights in action this weekend at the Northstar Sports Complex for the Northstar Knights Showcase, Friday December 2 through Sunday December 4.
